The heavy steel construction combined with the weight of the cargo they usually carry results in a density much greater than water, which causes them to sink if submerged. Contrary to some misconceptions, the design of shipping containers focuses on maximizing internal space and load efficiency rather than ensuring flotation. Thus, despite their ability to withstand severe maritime conditions, shipping containers would not serve as effective floating devices or boats.
Shipping containers can be watertight
Shipping containers are designed to be highly durable and are generally watertight, making them suitable for transporting goods across oceans. The structure of a standard shipping container includes corrugated steel walls and a watertight door gasket, which help to keep out moisture and protect the contents from the elements. Additionally, the floors are typically made from elevated treated wood to prevent water damage.
However, while shipping containers are designed to resist water ingress under normal conditions, they are not entirely waterproof. Over time, exposure to harsh weather conditions, wear and tear, or damage can compromise their watertight integrity. For instance, rust or corrosion on the metal parts of the container, damage to the door gaskets, or dents that disrupt the seal can allow water to enter. Therefore, while shipping containers can protect against rain and splashes during marine transport, they may require maintenance and inspections to ensure they remain watertight, especially if used for storage or modified into living spaces on land. Regular checks for integrity and prompt repairs are advisable to maintain their water-resistant properties.
